Christine Mercugliano Obituary

Christine Mercugliano, loving mother, devout Catholic, prolific poet, pianist, and “miracle cancer patient” passed away on April 15, 2026, shortly after celebrating her 90th birthday.

Born in New Haven, Connecticut to Carmela (Palluotto) Mercugliano, an Italian immigrant, and Frank Mercugliano, a first-generation American factory worker, she grew up in the city’s Italian-American neighborhood abundant with extended family – and where she developed a lifelong delight for Italian pastries. By age nine, Christine began writing poetry – a passion that resulted in thousands of works spanning her nine decades, including a recently published collection of her favorite poems.  She was also a dedicated pianist.

A brilliant and creative student, Christine attended The Gateway School on scholarship and graduated from Albertus Magnus College before her adventurous spirit led her to teach English in Hawaii and California. In California she met a Japanese scientist, Dr. Akira Mitsui, and moved to Japan to marry him. There they had three children: Akiko Mary Grace, Christopher (who passed away shortly after birth), and Kimii Catherine. Later they welcomed Lilyanne Naomi after moving to the United States.

In 1972, the family settled in Key Biscayne, Florida following Dr. Mitsui’s appointment as a professor at the University of Miami. Christine’s parents also moved to South Florida, and Sundays were devoted to Mass and home-cooked Italian meals at her parents’ house punctuated by her mother’s refrain, “Eat, Eat!” Other days were spent raising her daughters in the Catholic tradition and taking them to the beach several times a week while -- ever the English teacher -- repeatedly correcting their grammar. She later moved to Hollywood, FL.

Despite her small frame, Christine was incredibly resilient. Among her several medical feats, she survived a near-fatal childbirth experience in Japan. She later managed Stage IV colon cancer for over a decade, guided by International Cancer Advocacy Network and Cleveland Clinic Florida’s cancer center. Her success there earned her the title of “Miracle Patient” from her medical team.

In her later years at the Legacy of Boca Raton, where she was beloved by very special staff, she remained joyful and connected to her daughters who saw or spoke with her daily, and to her grandson, Akira Richard Heath, who came locally to study engineering.  Her days were filled with Masses and prayer, shopping for dresses and anti-wrinkle treatments, dining out -- especially relishing pastry shops and Dairy Queens -- visiting museums and parks, using her iPhone, practicing chair yoga, writing poetry, watching classic movies and game shows, and sharing her trademark gratefulness, optimism, and sense of humor. “I really, really want to get to Heaven,” she joked recently. “Just getting there is the problem.”

A devout Catholic, Christine began every day with Mass and prayer. She received all the blessed sacraments and was wearing her scapular medal when she passed away. Per her wishes, 30 Gregorian Masses arranged by the Association of Marian Helpers will begin on August 1, 2026.

In addition to her three loving daughters and adoring grandson, Christine is survived by her younger sister, Rosemary Loesche of Bainbridge Island, Washington and her younger brother, Frank Mercugliano of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Spain.
