Virginia “Jeannie/Nanny” Doherty died peacefully in Holy Cross Hospital on July 31, 2023 in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida at the age of 82.
Virginia is survived by her children, John, Deanna (Chris), Bob (Leslie), and Celeste; her grandchildren, Courtney, Alyson (Michael), Natalie, Garrett, Kylie, Logan, Griffin, and Gavin; her siblings, Marie, Betty, Mary, and Carol. She was preceded in death by her sisters, Clara and Dolores.  Virginia was born on April 30, 1941, in Kingston, New York to Ernest and Charlotte Fortino. She graduated from Miami Jackson Senior High School in 1959. She became a paralegal for 30+ years. Her proudest career moment was when she became a director through the North Dade Chamber of Commerce that provided work force experience and found employment for underprivileged youth. Shortly thereafter, she began working at the Pembroke Pines Charter School as a teacher assistant and then a secretary, where she retired from in 2011. Virginia was a single mom to four children. Her children remember her as a hard-working, loving, and dedicated mother who encouraged them to pursue their goals.
Virginia was a generous grandmother, nicknamed “Nanny Claus” by her grandchildren, who she loved to spoil during birthdays and holidays. She was passionate about baseball, always rooting for the New York Yankees and Miami Marlins. Virginia was also a huge fan of the slot machines and scratch-off tickets. She lived for her children and grandchildren.
A funeral is scheduled from 1:00 – 4:00 pm on August 6, 2023, with service starting at 2:30 pm at Landmark Funeral Home with a reception to follow at the Doherty residence, 10537 SW 49th Place, Cooper City 33328. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Virginia’s life.
Virginia will be laid to rest at 10:00 am on August 8, 2023, at Lauderdale Memorial Park Cemetery, 2001 SW 4 th Avenue, Ft. Lauderdale 33315.
